To all my friends in the Baca, After 28 years service, I will be leaving the Water District to pursue opportunities that require my full attention. The longevity of my career here is due to the confidence of many people, but let me say a personal thanks to just a few. First to my wife Marilyn, who in the fall of 1973 told me that she wanted to make this wonderful place our home, second to Dick Coffee, who asked me in 1979 to take over the District because” I at least knew where all the manholes were”. Third to Hanne Strong, who more than any person living made the Baca what it is today, and fourth to my partner at Summit Engineering, Mel Lee, who has been more than patient with my giving so little time to our business. Together with the help of many, many past and present Board Members, staff, and consultants and builders from all over the country, we have managed to grow from about 30 taps in 1979 to over 600 taps today. We did it most of the time without knowing who was going to build what or where next. Imagine having 4,000 + vacant lots spread out over an area bigger than all of the cities and towns in the San Luis Valley combined, together with an annual debt service of $280,000, and you can see what perserverance it has taken to get to the point where there is a little predictability. With the help of a very fine lawyer and my good friend Erich Schwiesow, we have secured 4,000 acre feet of water per annum, a fact which may not be fully appreciated for some time, but an accomplishment of which I am most proud. Let me end by saying that no physical or legal feats we have accomplished give me as much satisfaction as knowing that I leave you with the very finest management team you could possibly imagine, Steve McDowell and Darla Tiernan; I could never fully express my gratitude to, or confidence in them. Water is like life, how it starts and ends is a mystery, it’s what with you do with it while you have it that counts.
